Vassilakis Kumquat belongs to the special category of local products stores on the island today. It is located in Agios Ioannis, just outside the city, on the road to Aqualand. It was founded in 1960 by Angelos Vassilakis in order to initiate the visitors of the island to the unique Corfiot products made by traditional methods. The top product of that time was the Kum Quat, the golden orange juice of Southeast Asia that has arrived to this day thanks to the scientific interest of the Scottish herbalist Robert Fortune and Sydney Merlin grew up in Greece who planted and established the tree in his estate in Corfu early in 20th century.
Nowadays, the kum kwat has gotten into the chef's recipes, pastry, but also in the production of cosmetics and toiletries, the next generation, Aggelos Vassilakis' children, continuing this local tradition, present a multitude of Corfiot products, such as cucumber liqueurs, spoon sweets, jams, mandolins, mandola, cucumo-based cooking sauces, lemon-soap soaps and much more.
The visit to Vassilakis Kumquat is a visit to the history of productive Corfu, an attraction.
